Pedometer Tips
How to calculate distance:
Some pedometers will automatically calculate your distance based on stride. If you have a pedometer that does not automatically figure
distance, a rough estimate is every 2,000 steps are equal to one mile, though this can vary by person.
How many steps to take to improve health:
Many people use a pedometer as a way to gauge how much exercise they are getting. Traditionally, 10,000 steps per day is considered the
recommended amount for an active lifestyles, although the more steps your can take, the better.
How pedometers work:
Older models function by using a mechanical switch, much like a tiny pendulum. Newer pedometers have more sophisticated methods, such as
microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) combined with a software interface. The pedometers of the future will likely use GPS technology for
further accuracy.
The different kinds of pedometers:
Most pedometers, especially the less expensive ones, are clipped onto a belt and worn on the hip. Some more advanced models
can be worn on the wrist, or put in your pocket or even in a bag. Check the different reviews to learn more.
Common pedometer extra features:
While all pedometers will measure steps counts, many come with some extra features. Some of the more common extras are distance and
calculator calendars. Some models may have full clock and calendars functions, and some will have a memory storage component, so you can
track data. The top end models may even have more extra features than these, such as computer or online support.
Accuracy of pedometers:
The accuracy can vary greatly. Most will state they are accurate within 5% points, though this is sometimes suspect.
There tends to be a great correlation between price and accuracy; that is, the expensive models tend to be very accurate, while the very
inexpensive ones are usually inaccurate.
If you have a pedometer than you know is giving incorrect information, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's broken. Some
models must be placed or operated in a precise matter, so make sure that you are following the directions found in the instruction
manual. Often, a drained battery can skew the step count, so make sure to check that your battery is still working.
The best brands of pedometers:
While the best brand of pedometer can vary with personal tastes or needs, some brands are clearly superior to others. The Omron models
are all high quality, and have many computer-like features. The ACCUSPLIT pedometers are simple, but accurate. Also, the Silva
pedometers are quite good, though more expensive. Other manufacturers are still capable of making a reliable product, but make sure you
know what you're buying.
