What form of self-defense could be more momentum than using whatsoever general objects around you to defend yourself versus an attacker? Objects that were neither designed with self-defense in mind, nor exceptionally carried for such a aim by you. Objects that will neither raise the suspicion of Law Enforcement, nor take up any extra room since you would have had them either on your person or in your surroundings and environs anyway.

A person who has the right motivation, talent and will to survive may implement closely any object as a weapon.

Anything may become a weapon when your mind is the real weapon. Governments can’t ban it, customs can’t confiscate it and the only time you don’t have it is when you are asleep. This is the KEY lesson you must take away from this article.

In today’s anti-weapons climate a good deal of times and in a heap of emplacements it’s inconceivable to carry a gun or knife (Courts, airports, etc). Even in your home at the time of a violent invasion you might not be close to your gun, or even knife.

Sometimes all you have left is your tactical creativeness and your motivation and capacity for thinking outside the box.

Your mind will always be your biggest weapon, not least of all because with your intelligence and ingenuity you may locate the most effective duel use objects to use as weapons for the duration of an assault. Your mind is a weapon, and with it you are never unarmed. Wherever you are I guarantee you you are surrounded by a multitude of potential weapons. Learn to spot them effectively.

While the will to use improvised weapons is ofttimes instinctive for the experienced fighter, the effectiveness of such improvised weapons may depend on how good an eye you have in not only speedily locating and choosing your improvised “weapon” but also on your capacity to use that object in a way that will disable your attacker efficaciously (or grant you to escape the threat). And it is this capacity that will increase only with proper training.

First a few thoughts on Natural Reactions:

Think of fights you might have seen yourself. What are the original natural reactions a person has when being attacked? First the person will put up his arms to block any attack, then they will instinctively grab for any object that may multiply the expediency of their own “god” given weapons (their body and limbs). Often one of the initial such objects grabbed is a chair and it is used as a shield. If not a chair it will be another object that may be applied as either a weapon or shield. It’s an instinctive and natural reaction displayed by seasoned fighters and people with no experience in self defense alike.

Often the manner in which the attacked will use the object depends on their mindset and/or level of aggression and the circumstance itself. For example a good deal of humans when attacked will grab a chair and only use it as a shield. Other more aggressive fighters will instinctively begin hitting their attacker with the same chair and thence using it more as a striking weapon than plainly a shield. Using the chair or other object as a striking weapon will disrupt your attacker’s capacity from benefitting direction, lead and control of the attack. While using the chair or other object as a shield may many times be utile initially (especially in a surprise attack) you need to gain dominance and control speedily through overpowering strength and aggression.

Often not much thought goes into such a split second decision in terms of incisively which object to grab for. There merely isn’t sufficient time for someone who is being attacked to weigh up the potential effectiveness of one object over another. This will come with experience.

At the end of the day though, almost any object may be used as either a weapon or atleast a shield, numerous objects that I’m sure you would never have thought of as weapons or even shields. Obviously though, numerous objects are more effective than others.

The following is a list of a few possible objects you very well might have in your surroundings that could be applied as improvised weapons or shields:

The flashlight:

A favourite amid a lot of a self defense practitioner for years now. Wrap numerous 550 paracord around it and make a Koppo type weapon or use by itself. Either way it’s a popular substitute weapon (and flashlight!). Can be used to momentarily blind an attacker or as an affect weapon. See specialist noesis on how to use it most effectively.

Car antenna:

Listen up, in peculiar women who walk alone in car parks! You may rather speedily break off a metal car antenna and use it to fend off one or more attackers in a whipping action. The strikes may be very painful and effective and will likely at the very least stun and admonish an attacker from continuing. Remember, often times these predators are looking for an easy victim. If you prove to the attacker that you’ll be more disturb than your worth, he’s rather likely to discontinue the attack and seek out an individual who will give him less trouble.

Keys:

Not the easiest or most effective option in reality in spite of ofttimes being commended by defensive instructors. Shouldn’t be your firstborn choice, nevertheless if you have not one thing else at hand it’s better than nothing. Hold key among middle fingers and use to punch with more outstanding effect. Or may be used to scrape all over attacker’s face.

Steel cap boots:

Often overlooked but very legal everyplace and a very painful substitute weapon. Kick attacker in the shins or groin. A real fight stopper with proper aim.

Pens:

As the saying goes, “The pen is mightier than the sword”. Well, surely that was meant figuratively. In any case, when carrying a sword for the duration of your daily business is not a reasonable option (and I can’t imagine it is for most people) a pen makes rather a mighty substitute weapon. Another bestloved amid seasoned Martialists. Can be applied as a stabbing utilize or as a makeshift Kubaton. Hold in a pikal grip with your thumb on the clicker or blunt end and stab down or sideways repeatedly with the pointy end outwards. Hit to the liver, other soft appendages and neck for biggest effect. If you know how to use a Kubaton you recognise how to use a pen as a weapon. Choose a hefty strong metal pen like the now discontinued Rotring 600, a beefy hexagonal pen made of chrome-plated brass. Always legal, always utile for the intellectual and literate person for more than just self-defense, and a good substitute weapon for the concerned self defense practitioner.

The beer bottle, or other glass bottle:

Be careful with this one. Unlike in the movies DO NOT ever basi break the bottle on the table thinking you’ll be left with a sharp knife like weapon. You won’t. In reality what you will be left with is a little piece of the bottle’s neck.

That’s it. Nothing sharp protruding at any length and not one thing you may use efficaciously as a weapon.

In fact, for that matter, most of what you see on TV does not work, was never meant to work, and if you undertake it you’ll in all likelihood be in huge trouble.

You may still use a glass bottle as a weapon though, just don’t break it on the table first, smash it directly in your attacker’s face! Preferably use a glass bottle full of liquids, as an empty one will be far less effective.

Coffee mug or glass or ceramic cup:

Smash it all over your attacker’s face much like the glass bottle.

If you have hot coffee inside at the time, plainly splash it on his face. All the sudden you won’t complain that McDonalds makes their coffee too hot. The hotter the better as an substitute weapon.

If there is alcohol inside your glass, throw it in your attacker’s face. Aim for the eyes for stinging effect.

Carabiner:

An old army trick. Use a huge one as a makeshift “knuckleduster”. Works well. Punch and hammer fist your attacker’s head and face. Preferably you would have a steel one, but an aluminum type will work well sufficient if need be.

A chair:

A chair, not only to keep lions at bay they may also keep your attacker at bay or shield you from a knife attack. They also make good larger improvised affect devices, altho they are primarily best employed as a shield.

Trash may lid:

Another outstanding improvised shield. The trash may itself may be thrown at the BG and might at least give you time to escape or to utilise a better weapon.

Dresser drawer:

That’s right, if you’re attacked in your bedroom without delay grab and pull out a drawer from the dresser. Can be used as a shield or even as an affect weapon, much like the laptop or book. Check out your drawers right now and see if they come out totally and easily. If they don’t, try modifying them.

Walking cane/stick:

One of the best substitute weapons. Huge striking power. Easy to use and in particular effective with modern Arnis Filipino stick fighting techniques. Always legal, always with you, always right in your hand ready to be applied to strike, to disarm or to block an attack. It may nevertheless make you seem weaker or partially disabled, and therefore may make you a more desirable victim or target to an attacker. Remember, predators target the weakest people, or in other words the people who they think will put up the least amount of fight. Keep this in mind and determine for yourself whether a walking stick is a good option. Certainly, in any case, if you carry a walking stick then do seek out combat stick training.

A padlock:

Devastating weapon, you may only hope to be lucky sufficient to have one handy. Slip your middle finger inside the steel loop with the rest of the padlock in your fist. Use as makeshift knuckleduster or fist-load. Or swing padlock at your attacker while keeping it with one finger and the rest of padlock outwards. Aim for head, as the padlock would be too little to do harm to body.

Ashtray:

Usually a hefty solid weapon. Grab it like a frisbee and slam it into your assailant’s head, face, or jam it in his neck or throat. Throw the cigarette butts and ashes in his face as a distraction.

Magazine:

Rolled up it may make an magnificent affect weapon. Most effective using quick, strong, short strikes repeatedly to attacker’s face and to other more sensible areas due to the inherent lack of mass of the magazine.

Tie:

If you’re a business man in a suit you’ve got an splendid flexible weapon or a possible garrot as part of you wardrobe. If your attacker is in fact the one wearing a tie you may use it to control or disorient him. Grab his tie and pull downwards hard.

Please note: This is one reason I in general advise persons not to wear anything that doesn’t break effortlessly around the neck. It is too easy for somebody to use it to control you for the duration of an attack, just as you may use the same tactic on somebody else.

Laptop:

As was not long ago reported a celebrity used one as a weapon versus a pushy paparazzi with outstanding effect. Hold with both hands and slam into your attacker’s face full strength or push out and jab it into his face, neck or midsection with the sides/edges of the closed laptop. Can also be employed to shield versus an attacker’s weapon or strike.

Clipboard:

Used much the same way as the laptop. Has thinner and so sharper edges, nonetheless on the other hand it likewise has less mass and might be less painful because of that.

A book:

Not only good for reading and learning. Used much the same way as the laptop and clipboard, even though the book would have more heft than a clipboard.

Briefcase:

You’re already keeping it, and it has a secure handle. Swing it into your attacker’s face/head or use as a shield. Push him away with the briefcase and escape. Open briefcase and take out other substitute weapons that have been brought up here such as magazine, pen, etc.

Lamp:

You’ll normally have a lamp nearby in your home. Grab it, and smash it throughout your attacker’s face. Use the cord as a flexible weapon.

Fire extinguisher:

Has been employed before with great effect. Devastating power. Aim for head/face. Makes an splendid shield too. Also spray contents directly onto attacker. It will at the least disorient him, it will many times even hide your exit due to the cloud of white dust.

Put one in you car. You will have to have one in your car anyway for fire safety, but it might even save your life if you need to use it as a weapon.

Duct tape:

Not a weapon as such but makes good handcuffs to hold your attacker until the police arrive. Large zip ties are a good substitute to duct tape.

Light switch:

Darkness is a brilliant weapon beneath the right circumstances. If you are attacked by night, the light switch may be the best “weapon” for defense, without actually being a weapon as such. Simply turn the lights off. Darkness is a tactical vantage for you, after all you recognise the layout of your own house while your attacker does not. You likewise know where you have other weapons and escape routes. Darkness could likewise plainly give you the time necessitated to escape. Also, darkness will increase the blinding effectiveness of your flashlight if you are carrying one.

Clothing:

Are you wearing a coat or scarf? A coat or jacket may be applied to shield yourself versus an attacker’s knife or other weapon. Wrap it around your weak arm, and hit and defend yourself with your strong arm and legs.

The long sleeves may likewise be employed as a flexible weapon for choking or entangling limbs.

If on your bicycle:

Your helmet, tire pump, and flexible bike locks are potential affect devices.

Even the bike itself may act as an effective shield versus an attacker. It will act as a good obstruction amongst you and him giving you time to escape. If need be it may even be thrown at the attacker.

Belt buckle:

A heavy brass or steel one. Can make a great affect weapon. Can even be swung at the attacker since it’s attached to your belt.

Belt:

Even without a heavy buckle your belt may be one of the best flexible weapons available.

Sprays:

Any spray will do brilliantly. Think regarding it, what spray do you have around? Hair spray? Deodorant? Air freshener? Silicone spray? I personally have all and more of these sprays right here as I type this, detached from the hair spray. All these sprays will blind your attacker almost as well as pepper spray. If you’re a smoker you in all likelihood have a lighter handy. Add a lighter in front of the spray and you’ve got an magnificent flame thrower. I’m sure we all tried this when we were kids.

At the very least the spray may be used as an affect weapon if not one thing else.

Comb:

Especially a metal comb.

Can be raked all over an attacker’s face repeatedly with good success.

Umbrella:

Always another favorite. The more spectacular ones make a good affect weapon and improvised stick fighting weapon. Also a great shield a la Roman style when opened. Some of the full sized ones have a pointy bit protruding, perhaps 2 to 3 inches long, so while you shield yourself you may also push the opened umbrella forward into the attacker’s face and body.

The littler umbrellas are good too, notwithstanding of course they are less lasting and have less power due to lack of size.

Iron:

A outstanding mutual household device. Can cause a lot of harm from use as a striking weapon, and again most irons have an electrical cord that makes a good flexible weapon as well.

A broom or mop:

Another long affect device. Can be used as a long staff for stick fighting techniques. Can also be applied to hold the attacker at a distance.

Your car:

While it’s not always justified to use deadly strength in this way since it may be argued that if you’re inside your car you are safe, if a gang of hoodlums or an angry middle eastern mob is surrounding your car, you’ve got 3000 pounds worth of effective weaponry on hand. At times deadly strength may be justified depending on the circumstance including any disparity of strength amid you and the attacker(s) and the resulting risk you face at the time. Your main goal must be to escape in this case, but if necessary run a hoodlum over to affect your escape.

A phone:

Excellent affect device, very handy. A cord phone also makes a good flexible weapon if you’re skilled in using one effectively.

Phones have been employed galore times as affect devices.

Coins:

Throw coins from your pocket into the face of your attacker. Another good diversionary tactic.

A packed roll of coins may also make a good fist-load and has been applied a good deal of times as such.

Sports equipment:

Tennis racket, golf club, pool stick, the apparent and ofttimes applied baseball bat, dumbbells, etc. All are magnificent affect devices. Keep a few golf clubs and balls in your car even if you don’t play. Or a baseball bat and glove and perchance numerous balls too in order to not raise the suspicion of LEO.

Watch:

Preferably a heavy steel dive watch. Take the watch off your wrist and wrap it around the fist you punch with (strong arm). The primary punch must break the glass and subsequent punches could cut your attacker up. Even if the glass doesn’t break and cut him it’s still a good improvised affect device if need be.

Bracelet:

A la Fred Perrin style. Only works with a solid one piece bracelet, not the flexible link type. Take your metal bracelet off and hold in your fist. Use as an affect device to punch with.

Your voice:

Your voice may be a great improvised weapon wherever you are.

Verbally you may oftentimes stop, control or at very least influence the direction of an attack. Far too an extensive a subject to get into here. Learn regarding verbal commands and communicating accomplishments for defensive purposes/redirection of attacker’s violent conduct toward you. Sometimes known as verbal judo. Any good martial art or self defense scheme needs to address this subject.

—- One note on employing flexible weapons:

As you may see a number of the potential weapons I brought up in this little list are flexible, for example the electrical cord and clothing. Please keep in mind that as with most flexible weapons, specialist noesis in hand to hand combat is necessitated for most effective use. Flexible weapons plainly aren’t as straight forward as let’s say a chair or even a book which will instinctively be employed as a shield often even by humans with little or no experience in self defense.

This is merely a little sampling of possibilities. It would be totally unlikely to list for you all the possible substitute use “weapons”/objects you might come all over that might be of outstanding defensive use for the duration of an attack. The list would be too large, and no one may recognise what will be available to you in your specific environs at that time. Obviously some environments are richer in potential substitute weaponry than others. It’s you’re occupation to train yourself to tell apart these potential weapons out of any objects around you.

From now on look at the objects around you with a dissimilar eye. Look at objects in your surroundings through sort of a “weapons” filter. Specifically ask yourself, which ones may make an effective weapon? How would you use it? Will that object actually cause hurt to your attacker and disable him, or is it in truth just a waste of time? Sometimes an object would make such a poor weapon that it’s better to fight unarmed. Learn to accurately valuate potential weapons in your environment.

No one may actually instruct you or show you each object that has the potential to be employed as a weapon. Above all it is a mindset that you will have to develop. Preparation and training is the best way to aid guarantee a better prospect for success in a self defense incident. But once you manufacture this situational cognizance and survival mentality you’ll be much better prepared to defend yourself in any circumstance than ever before, for you will have an instinctive understanding and application of self defense as a way of life.

Think outside the box, think like a fighter, like someone committed to self preservation and the defense of loved ones from societal predators.

Potential weapons are all around you.

It is now plainly a matter of identifying them.

Before the Weber cooker smoker, I had a horizontal smoker which had a fire chamber on one side. It was finelooking good, except one thing – temperature control problem. If you don’t make BBQ too many times then it’s OK. Some of my friends (who had a Weber smoker) advised me to buy it, since it’s much more utile and makes the whole BBQ routine much easier. It has a lot of room for various birds and ham, so you don’t have to wait much.

The only thing I didn’t like is it’s weight – too heavy to move around your backyard. On the other hand it is much more stable. So, my cooker smoker helps me to make splendid BBQ parties on our weekends with my friends and neighbours. You may add charcoal any time you need, without having it dismantled. Although it’s a little more highpriced than some similar smokers it has a lot of pros, so you won’t regret with regards to spending extra money. Of course, it takes some time to control the whole process, since smoking doesn’t take place fast, but in the end you will be more than happy with the result.

When buying it don’t forget to check that all parts fit correctly, so there will be no troubles with temperature control. The former models had weak legs, but they’ve solved the issue. Even if you don’t have much experience it will be no problem with the Weber 2820 mountain cooker smoker to make good and tasty BBQ with this smoker. The users manual, actually, is not that good, but you may find all the info in the net.

It has two dissimilar size models, 18.5 inch diameter and 22.5 inch diameter. You may smoke any type of meat using charcoal and wood. There are three segmentations in the cooker: a charcoal bowl, where you have to place smoke wood and charcoal, section with water pan and two cooking grates, and the last section is domed lid. The cooking division likewise has access door that may be open downward or completely got rid of to provide easy access.

The cooking grates are big sufficient to cook various birds at the same time. They are triple chrome plated for easy cleanup and durability. The meat in the cooking division and a charcoal bowl are disunited by the water pan, so there is no direct heating, which is essential when smoking meat. The water in the pan also moderates the cooker temperature and, as a result, we have moist cooking conditions.

The smoker provides good temperature control over cooking process, which is very essential when making great barbecue. There are no difficulties to maintain stable temperature for up to ten hours of cooking. There are three vents that support to control the temperature. Since the temperature control is well regulated you don’t have to spend much time over the process.

Setting up the Coleman WeatherMaster Screened 6 Person Tent was rather an easy task compared to most 6 person tents, and I did it alone. A much shorter person could likewise set it up solo, though an extra set of hands would make the routine a little quicker. Color coded poles and the continuous pole sleeves are a couple of reasons for the simplicity of the set up. The pin and ring design and the Insta-clip attachments also simplify the process. The instructions, sewn into the carry bag, are as easy to follow as they could possibly be. Those inexperienced in tent set up ought to have few practice runs in the backyard to make sure things will go with no problems or difficulties on camping day. Dis-assembly was simple as well. The real shocker was how easy I got the tent back into the carry bag without even folding it up very neatly.

You may be assured with a name like WeatherMaster that this tent will hold up to the elements. On a recent camping trip I set this Coleman up for a good deal of young relatives, it rained for closely the whole week and not a drop made it is way inside. I did use an extra tarp under the tent as I always do, altho the waterproof floors probably would have kept up on their own. Made of weather resistant fabric coated with polyester and webbing and zippers designed to keep water out you are sure to stay arid during rainy weather. The rainfly is huge sufficient to cover the doors and windows. The wind strong frame was engineered to hold up to pretty strong winds. The screened room and all mesh ceiling principally increase ventilation helping to cool down the tent, which are my bestloved features while camping in South Texas. An air flow port is also built into the tent, but most tents have these now days. There are a large total of windows to support keep you cools as well.

The Coleman WeatherMaster 6 is designed for sleeping six people. It may do this, but it will be rather tight. five will fit more comfortably. When set up it measures seventeen feet by nine feet. At 36 pounds it is rather heavy if you plan on backpacking it very far. The tent has two interior rooms which is good for privacy or having a recreation are for cards, eating, etc. There is one outside screened area that is great for getting away from the bugs or just getting a good deal of shade. There are two doors, one of which is actually hinged. The ceiling is rather high at over 70 inches in center.

The air cool port is a cool feature for running extension cords or reaching outside of the tent to reach the cooler. The all mesh ceiling offers a nice view if you have the rain fly off. There is a loop on the ceiling for hanging lights. The stakes are not the best quality. They never are anymore regardless of which tent you buy. I always recommend buying additional stakes, preferably some made of steel rather of plastic. Also the rain fly doesn’t cover all of the porch room. This isn’t genuinely an issue unless you plan on sleeping in the screened porch room or storing something there that could be damage by the rain. Probably shouldn’t store that kind of stuff in the screened room anyway.

The Coleman WeatherMaster 6 Person Tent is one of the better weather resistant tents out there. If you don’t like or need the screened porch feature you could just pick up a Coleman WeatherMaster 8 which is basically the same ten except with a closed in room where the screened room is on the WeatherMaster 6 person. The screened porch is a outstanding feature in my opinion though, but I may understand why a lot of might not want or need it. This is a good Family Tent that is sure to make happy campers. Blair
I’ve camped for many years, first as a Girl Scout and then as an adult. My husband had never camped, let alone in a tent. I took him out in this tent to a National Forest campground in the Shenendoah mountains, and it rained steady for a week. This tent saved the vacation. The middle room served as our dining and rec center, providing ample space for our small camp table where we ate and played cards. The screened porch was a perfect vestibule, and on sunny days it’s a great place to relax, nap, read and escape from the bugs. The sleeping room is perfect for two adults and a queen-sized air bed. The middle room will comfortably sleep an entire family, or serve as the “living room”, gear room, work room, etc. It has a high ceiling with a loop for hanging a light. The over-cover and Coleman construction make this the driest tent I’ve ever experienced. After a week of steady rain, not one seep, weep or drip.

Homemade Bubbles

Mix this up the day before you want to go out and blow bubbles. These bubbles are so good you won’t mind the wait.

What you need:

Empty half gallon milk container, Water, A measuring cup, Liquid dish detergent, Measuring spoons, Glycerin or corn syrup, Shallow bowl or disposable pie pan, Scissors and Bubble blower.

What you need to do:

Rinse out the milk container and fill it with water, then pour out 1/3 of a cup of water. Add 1/3 cup of liquid dish detergent and 2 tablespoons of Glycerin or Corn Syrup to the milk container. Close the container and turn it over a couple of times SLOWLY to mix it up. Don’t shake it! Let it sit for 24 hours. Then pour a lot of of the mixture into a shoal bowl or disposable pie pan. Dip the bubble blower into the solution and blow. You’ll make nice thick bubbles that float for longer than the store purchased kind.

Try making your own bubble blower:

Chenille sticks (pipe cleaners) without apparent effort bend and twist into a hoop. Make heart shapes, moon shapes, experiment and find out what works and what doesn’t. Be resourceful and recycle objects. Cut a circle out of the container of a margarine lid, glue a stick to it for a handle and see how that Try the plastic ring from a canned soda six-pack.

Take it to the Next Level

These bubbles are so strong you may make them bounce. Yup, bounce.

What you need:

White cotton gloves available at most art or craft stores, 4 straws and a piece of sting (about 4 feet long). Thread the straws with the string end to end, and tie a knot where the stings meet, creating a square. Dip that square into the bubble solution and gently lift out. Hold it up and have a collaborator blow bubbles toward the trampoline and watch them bounce. Then try putting on the white cotton glove and let the bubble bounce off of your gloved hand. It may take a little exercise like the trampoline, but it works!

Magic Railroad

Little kids seem to be fascinated by trains, as evidenced by the popularity of such characters as Thomas the Tank Engine.

What you need:

Sidewalk chalk and a side walk.

What to do:

Bring your bucket of chalk outside and get everyone involved making a railroad. Map out a railroad finish with stations, water towers, cities, villages, what ever your imagination wants to visit on this railroad. Add lakes, crossings, bridges, tunnels. Draw trees and flowers along side, roads for autos to cross.. Then when you’re finished, get everyone on board and ride the Magic Railroad. Let them get off at their stations and let them play.

Paper Mural Kids

What you need:

Roll of big paper (48inches high by 50 feet wide) Try Fadeless Paper Rolls available at Michaels and any online craft shop for in regards to $16, Crayons and or Markers (broad tips work best), masking tape

What to do:

Take the kids out to the park or to the backyard, with the roll of paper and the wide tip markers and crayons. Tape it up versus the building or lay it out on the hard ground. Have everyone pose in a very dramatic way versus the paper. The kids working with partners, take turns tracing each other. Then everyone fills in the details of their own faces, clothing, shoes, etc. The rough gritty cement of the building or ground produces most interesting textures. They may turn it into a mural by adding images, words and whatsoever their imaginations come up with.

Note:

The papers come in white and colors and even prints like clouds and landscapes. Make sure you choose a lighter background that will effortlessly be covered by markers or crayons.

Soda Fountains

Want something more explosive and messy?

Try this in your backyard.

What you need:

A 2 liter bottle of soda (not diet), Funnel, Tablespoon, and Salt.

What to do:

Open the soda bottle, insert the funnel. Drop in the tablespoon of salt, remove the funnel and get back! The soda bubbles over and makes a huge mess!

Take it to the Next Level

This gets genuinely messy but it’s so much fun you may want to double your furnishes so you have sufficient on hand for a second go around.

What you need:

Outdoor space that is okay to get messy. Unopened 2 liter bottle of soda (not diet), a plastic straw and a package of Wintergreen Lifesavers.

What to do:

Open the soda bottle, and set it in a clear spot on the ground. Open the Lifesavers and push the straw through the centers. Get all of them on the straw. Carefully now, place one end of the straw in the bottle opening and all at once, pour all the mints in. Get back! The contents of the bottle will shoot assorted feet in to the air.

So there you have a few ideas to undertake with your own children this summer. Get out there with them and be a fun parent. Get messy, have fun!

We’ve even discovered, by chance, that if you forget to insert the plastic straw after washing it, the bottle is still usable by simply tilting it up and drinking (like regular bottle), as long as you place the mouth-piece on top.
We recomend it to anyone!

Perez
I purchased this for my 9 month old son since he always tries to “steal” my grown-up size CamelBak bottle. I’m very surprised that he knows how to drink from it at his age, but he does! Much better than any sippy cup we’ve purchased. The only thing I have an issue with is cleaning the straw and the bite valve. It is top-rack dishwasher safe, however it seems to collect food and such during the cycle. I only put water in it, so I’ve just been soaking it in bleach & water to clean it. CamelBak makes a cleaning system for their other products so I’m hoping it will work on this as well.

Thompson
I have the larger camelbak bottles but for my daughter going to kindergarten I thought a smaller one would be easier to lug around. The only problem we have is that this one has a button to push at the front to get the bite valve to pop up and its too hard for her to use, I just switched out the top from another bottle and its fine.

It is used in both Katadyn and older PUR Hiker models.

Overall, I think the quality of Katadyn filter is better than the older PUR brand, but neither of them lasted long. If you do extended backcountry trips, expect it to last about 2 weeks with 4 people using it. I do not trust the durability of ceramic filters so I stick with my trusty old PUR/KATADYN hiker which is easy to repair and rebuild with the kit provided.

The Base Camp is an excellent idea; fill the bag and let gravity do the work.
The filters are advertised as: “Provides up to 200-gallon capacity (depending on water quality)” I’m guessing you’d only get 200-gallons with clean, city tap water.
The past 3 years we’ve gone into the BWCA with 8 people for 4 days. We bring the Base Camp filter with 2 replacement cartridges. Each cartridge lasts for perhaps 25-30 gallons (~ 10-12 refills of the Base Camp bag). The water in the BWCA generally has a red tint (iron?) and there are always a few microscopic bugs, but I would still hope a filter would last more than 25-30 gallons. I follow all the directions that come with the filter with the hope of extending its life, but it doesn’t really help.
I’d give this filter 5 stars if it lasted for just 100 gallons or were half the current price of ~ $33 USD.
On the positive side, the filter works – no one has returned home with a water-borne illness.
P.S. This year, Amazon was the only place we could find these filters. They had been back-ordered (sometimes for several months) at all the local retailers.

The Katadyn worked much better than the other two, and we ended up using it to filter water for most of the group. Would wholeheartedly recommend.

I find I’m also using them for camelbak’s bite-valve plastic water bottles and my older Nalgenes. Works well for erasing the stale smell that can accumulate in the bottles. I would use them on a more regular basis, but I find they are too expensive to use one as often as I’d like to.

Self-defense items such as stun guns, pepper sprays and personal alarms get all the publicity. You have to be living underneath a rock not to have heard of the stun device called taser that is carried by over 12,000 law enforcement agencies in the U.S. alone. Pepper spray is the most widely employed and publicized self-defense item in the world.

Here are a great deal of little known, easy to use and cheap self-defense items that may save your life.

The kubotan has been employed in the martial arts for decades. It is a little 5 1/2 inch long piece of metal, commonly aluminum, which is employed for attacks in self-defense. It is kept in “either an ice pick grip(for hammer fist strikes) or forward grip (for stabbing and pressure point attacks)..It may be used for benefitting leverage on an assailant’s wrist, fingers and joints.”

They may normally be used in any place a finger may be employed for striking. Police officers have been known to grab a suspect around the neck and stick the kubotan in the little of his back to gain compliance to a rightful order.

Because it is made of metal it is much more rigid than a finger. A poke in the eye with a kubotan will gain prompt submission.

Others include Blue Cat and Brutus brands of ridged knuckles with pointed cat ears that add power to your strikes in the event of an attack. They are easy to use with two holes that you slip your fingers through for easy access from your key chain.

Another is the key chain attachment with steel affect tips that comes in both black and silver. This is another variation of molded knuckles that heighten the power of a strike.

A distinctive one is the Kubotan Pen with ferro rod. It is a to a complete degree functional black ink ballpoint pen inside a kubotan that may be applied to “inflict temporary paralysis or uttermost pain when delivered to pressure points or soft tissue in the body. It is 6.1 inches long and is made by Smith & Wesson and is an example of a tactical, survival pen. It may be applied to get started fires and as a self-defense weapon.”

Even without martial arts experience it is easy to learn how to use this little-known self-defense weapon. Hip bones, shins, arms, collar bones, ankles and kneecaps are all good targets. Because it’s on a key chain it may be swung with great force. There is no wrong way to use it. Just hit the assailant as hard as you may on closely any share of his body.

Try a great deal of of these self-defense items. They work and may save your life.

Merrell is kicking into full gear with a slew of Generation 2.0 (Gen2) minimalist running shoes and new models for training, water sports, and wellness: Run, Train, Water, Life.

I wrote regarding the Minimalist Lifestyle closely a year ago and boy, what a divergence a year makes! I’ve tested over 50 minimal shoes in running (road and trail), fitness, casual, recovery, dress, and even golf since writing that article – 70+ and counting as of this writing. VIVOBAREFOOT (Evo, Neo, Ultra, Achilles, Aqua, Dharma) and New Balance (Minimus Road, Trail, Life, Trainer) had a good get started but no footwear manufacturer have done what Merrell did in one season – multiple productions in multiple outdoor categories with a consistent barefoot platform. Simply amazing!

Barefoot Run

New for Spring 2012 are the Dash Glove and Bare Access ARC for women; Road Glove and Bare Access for men. The current Merrell Trail Glove and Pace Glove are likewise share of Barefoot Run. The Road and Dash Glove have synthetic leather and breathable air mesh uppers with reflective materials. They also have a fused rubber bumper. The midsole does not have the shock absorption plate found in the Trail Glove and that is in all likelihood what is permitting for a pancake flat landing for road running.

The Bare Access barefoot shoes are gateway or transitioning or bridging shoes for beginners and those taking the leap into better running form. They are all zero drop like the other barefoot shoes but with some cushioning to help you manufacture your form slowly. It is closely identical to the Road and Dash Glove except for the extra 8mm M-Bound cushioning and somewhat dissimilar outsole lugs. Great for long runs or for those starting to transition to barefoot shoes.

In my opinion, the Merrell Barefoot Access is in all likelihood the shoe the masses are looking for: runners who are starting to ‘get it’ that minimal shoes are training tools for developing better running form and running injury-free for life. Throw in a gradual transition plan and they’re on their way enjoying running again – no more pain and no more injuries well into their senior years.

Barefoot Train

New for Spring 2012 is the Lithe MJ Glove for women. This is just a water-repellant version of the Pure Glove. The current Merrell Lithe Glove, Contour, Pure, Embark, True and Sonic Glove are also portion of Barefoot Train.

Barefoot Water

All the barefoot shoes in this category are new for Spring 2012. They include the Swift and River Glove for women; Current and Rapid Glove for men.

The Current and Rapid Glove both have synthetic leather and air mesh uppers plus quick drying materials with drainage ports in the tool and heel with a similar outsole to the Road Glove. The Rapid Glove is lace-less with an adaptable instep strap.

Beside barefoot shoes, there are likewise sandals being introduced for Spring 2012: Pipidae and Hylidae Wrap for women; Hydro, Aqua, Batari and Paciki Wrap for men. The wraps all have synthetic leather uppers with neoprene/spandex lining, 6mm compression molded EVA midsole cushion, and 3mm sole lug depth.

Barefoot Life

Most of the shoes in Barefoot Life are new introductions for Spring 2012. They include Serene, Delight and Wonder Glove for women; Edge and Slant Glove for men. Current models include the Tough Glove and Power Glove but the Power Glove is being discontinued. The Edge and Slant Glove has a similar platform as the Trail Glove but with cow suede uppers and a Nubuck leather rear foot sling. The Slant Glove is a lace-less slip on.

Beside barefoot shoes, there are likewise sandals for women: Burst and Spirit Wrap.

Looking Forward

So some shoes, so galore activities! The Minimalist Lifestyle is at last getting reality. Barefoot Cross Fit and Barefoot Golf next? The chances are endless once you have a barefoot platform like Merrell Barefoot to build on.

After tracking the running distinguishing trait merchandising sales from the Leisure Trends Group for the past two years, trail running sales have been on a tear this year and Merrell also has an stimulating trail shoe for Spring 2012 that I’m likewise looking forward to: Merrell Mix Master.

The Merrell Mix Master is a transitioning trail shoe with a 4mm heel-to-toe drop and light cushioning. TPU overlay provides a secure fit and the bellows tongue keeps debris out. Outsole is Merrell Mix sole with sticky rubber and 3.5mm lugs. Keep your eyes out for this stealth trail shoe – it might be a best seller!
